Last week, I spoke with Patricia Cusak, creator of Life in the Second Half on Substack.
We had an informal talk about aging, longevity, and the issues with the way this topic is covered, especially in the media.
We need more older voices speaking the truth about the aging process. It's not all downhill.
The assumption that what's commonly observed is normal applies to many topics, but it's most applicable to people's beliefs about aging.
The aging process, as determined by nature, does not require cognitive dysfunction or the development of any of the long list of health conditions linked to aging.
Health issues occur, but there's nothing to say that they're supposed to happen.
Like all health issues, we should ask why they develop, what we have done to make us function differently than nature intended, and what we have missed.
Big questions – many still waiting for an answer. The gut microbiome is a good example.
Ignored for years, factors affecting health conditions were determined without understanding that the gut played an essential role. Thus, we have to question what we've been told.
We created a world in which the diet and lifestyle of the average person don't support good gut function.
That's a recipe for health issues. Now, all we have to do is avoid this recipe. It's a simple concept, but challenging to put into practice.
It starts with accepting that aging doesn't have to be a never-ending series of losses, limitations, and letting go of who we are.
A long life can also be a great one. It begins with the right attitude.
This, in a nutshell, is what Patricia and I discussed. Enjoy!
